When I was offered the opportunity to review I Quit Sugar by Sarah Wilson, I thought, I've done that before, I could do it again. Little did I realize that when she says sugar free, she really means it -fruit included.
Before you completely tune out and say, "I can't do that, forget this book," allow me to explain a little further. Her detox program gets rid of all fructose, but that is just to recalibrate your body. The recalibration makes it easier to only eat the proper small amount our bodies were designed to need. Click here to read the first chapter.
As I read through this book, I thought, I could totally do this!...If I were single or didn't mind making separate meals for myself. I have enough difficulty getting one of the kids to eat and I don't want to take away all of her favorites.
I agreed with a lot of what the author said about needing to eat less sugar and the benefits to doing so. However, she suggests the long term limitation of grains and fruit more than I believe to be necessary.
What I like: I really like how the book is organized week by week and gives tips and suggestions on what to eat and how to help if you're craving sugar at each point. I also love that her recipes use similar ingredients, so there should be no or at least less waste.
What I thought could use improvement: There is a kid section, but other than lunchbox suggestions, I really didn't find it to be helpful. She does have a kid's cookbook available too, so maybe that's why. I also found it frustrating that I would be required to go to the health food store about 40 minutes away to find some of the ingredients.
Recipe: For my recipe test, I chose Green Eggs. For the most part I really liked the eggs, but due to the recipes general measurements, mine were a little lemon heavy. The boys liked the eggs well enough, but requested ketchup. I will definitely be making this recipe again, but with a few tweaks like a smaller lemon.
Overall: I would really like to try the detox program sometime in the future. I think it would be very interesting to see what I wanted to eat after recalibrating. The author makes it all seem very doable and there is an online community available for support (connect on facebook and twitter), so I feel like my chances of success would be high.

Could you cut out all fructose from your diet?
I healed many health issues when I stopped using cane sugar. Now, I only use stevia or natural fruit to sweeten.
ReplyDeleteI know a lot of people made the switch to stevia and I hear good things about it.
DeleteThis sounds interesting. I could never, nor would I, give up sugar on purpose, though.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds a really good book.I do not believe I can give up sugar and I do not think I want to,I am very careful of what the kids eat though.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of eating healthier, but within limits. I would not cut some of the things you had issues with as well. Limiting sugar is one of the things I have done for a while and have actually felt better for it. I use Stevia and my kids have no idea their treats are healthier.
ReplyDeleteThis looks interesting! I've recently cut some extra sugar and carbs from my diet and have substituted with better choices!
ReplyDeleteThat's great. We've been trying to make better choices too like eating whole grains and natural sweeteners
DeleteSugar and carbs are my two drugs of choice :)
DeleteI've always wondered about a diet like this (well, not really a diet, but you know what i mean lol!) I think I might have to check out this book to learn more! Thanks for sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteYep, i get what you're saying. You're welcome.
DeleteI have heard of this. However I don't know if I could just quit sugar. It was hard enough when I had to take most of the salt out of my diet. I think I would lost it if I had to do sugar.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that I would be able to go totally sugar-free but I would like to cut back quite a bit. For me the hardest is my sweet tea. I could give up chocolate and other junk foods but my sweet tea I just don't know. Sounds like an interesting book though, I will have to check it out!
ReplyDeleteQuitting sugar completely might be difficult for me. I try to limit as much as possible though.
ReplyDeleteQuitting sugar would be very hard for me since I love eating fruits. I think I have a better chance at cutting out sweets.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Fruit would be the hardest part. Fruit is a very common dessert and snack at our house.
DeleteI am a sugar fiend, which is probably more the reason why I need to cut it out. But I am not sure I could do fruits too.
ReplyDeleteI am a believer in everything in moderation.
ReplyDeleteI always say, everything in moderation! But it would help the book to add the kids section.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely everything in moderation, but some of us don't know when to quit! Amber N
DeleteI am working right now on getting off as much sugar as possible. I am not sure I would cut out fruit but I do understand the theory behind it. Diet sodas have to go too. But in the end, I do believe moderation is the key.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds really interesting. I hate the idea of cutting out sweets, but I know there are huge benefits!
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting book - I couldn't cut out fruit though - I have to have my snack on them everyday. x
ReplyDeleteI need to quit sugar. This will be a book I will check out. Amber N
ReplyDeleteThere is no way I can cut out fruit even if it's just a short time. I love my fruit too much! Kudos to people who can though!
ReplyDeleteThis detox program sounds really interesting! I'm not sure if I could cut out fruit though!
ReplyDeleteI really need to quit sugar as well. I will have to check this book out. Hopefully it will help!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a book I would enjoy. I think a little sugar detox would be great.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really interesting. I have heard a lot about sugar detoxes, but I have never tried one.
ReplyDeleteI've been reading a lot about how harmful sugar is, and how it's connected to so many problems from diabetes to Alzheimer's. I want to cut down...soon....
ReplyDeleteThe thought of this sounds awesome, but I feel like it would be so hard to stick too!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! This books has been getting quite a lot of circulation at the library!
ReplyDeleteI have gone sugar-free for two months at a time, but nothing to this extreme. I did use Truvia, and I cannot cut out fruit - I could not imagine NOT eating fruit.
ReplyDeleteI love that you did such a well - rounded review - I know I can rely on a recommendation when there is some critique as well! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI just saw this book in the store! I thought it was pretty interesting. I have gone sugar free for a month before.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great and interesting book. I have decreased my consumption of refined sugars in my diet. My body doesn't process it as well as it did when I was younger. LOL I hate aging....
ReplyDeleteInteresting book! I only use sugar for baking but I don't think I van give up fruits altogether. we just love it.
ReplyDeleteBut for health's sake, I'd love to sit down with this and learn more ways how to lessen sweet sugar in our diet
I don't use sugar either. All my sugar comes from fruits and other natural sources. It was pretty easy to do for me
ReplyDeleteWhen I eat too much sugar I grt very tured and get a lot of spots on my face. But uf I cut it out I feel and look so much better. But this doesn't include fruit only sugar I add to my food or cakes and sweets etc.
ReplyDeleteSugar is one of the most important commodity in my home. I cannot say I can quit using it. But limiting into smaller amounts can do to us.
ReplyDeleteI think I could not quit sugar, I am in the south and we love our sweet tea!!! But this is great for those who go that route.
ReplyDeleteYes, I need to quit sugar, I'm trying to get rid of it and I LOVE the title of the book!
